Rhode Island gets One Half Billion Dollars from Google

And GOOG stock goes up. Rhode Island, which basically makes no money whatsoever triumphed over corporate monolith Google to the tune of (pinkie to corner of mouth) five hundred million dollars. That’s sort of a lot. Especially for the great state of Rhode Island, which is small enough you can toss a cinderblock from one end to the other without using both hands and one of the brokest states in the Union.
Massive unemployment.
They’re probably think-working how to get a couple bucks out of Amazon and Facebook, next. Tort, tort, tort, tort.

Niche evolution

The greatest challenge for the online publisher is choosing a compelling niche. The right niche is there, but it will require preparation and research to discover it. For example, maybe catnip is not a good niche, but matatabi is!

Interest in a particular niche is essential, but expertise in the subject is not critical. Exploring the niche will naturally increase your knowledge. However, do not over-reach: make sure you stay within your technical and scientific limits if you select a niche that demands such knowledge.

Excitement and passion for the subject will engender the same. If you aren’t excited about the niche, it will be impossible to convey any excitement to others about it. The most important thing is that you don’t get sucked into setting up a niche that is based on something transient. Avoid fads and short-lived flashes in the pan. Make sure that the niche you choose has long-term potential so that your publishing efforts don’t reach a dead end.

Making Content Mobile

I remember my first mobile web browser. It was a sad little WAP browser with something like a 40×8 character display in my little flip phone. Pictures were few and far between and usually required a good squint.
If you read the future of mobile content and think back on WAP content versus the Playbooks, iPads and Android devices of today, the gap between the desktop, laptop, nettop and mobile device is narrowing. Indeed, the big difference is screen size. On my current smartphone, I need to zoom in and out to read some of my favorite blogs and sites.
So, think back to the early days of the web, before streaming video, before music services, before your laptop did a very good impersonation of your television. We will see that same evolution with mobile devices. Right now, my smartphone plays movies from Youtube. Sort of, usually. In the future, I’ll be carrying an immersive 3D experience.

The future of transportation

Electric bikes are the future. Outside the US, one of the most popular means of transport, as demonstrated by the sales of Honda’s Cub and similar underbones is a small-displacement two-wheeler. In the US, two-wheel vehicles aren’t generally regarded as primary transportation, and it’s difficult to sell motorcycles and scooters displacing less than 250cc’s.
But, just as an energy crisis created demand for compact cars in the US, future pressure on fossil fuels will have electric vehicles replacing the 50cc motors of the world’s two-wheelers, and more people opting for 2 wheels when 4 aren’t absolutely needed.
I am ready, and I will promote ebikes.

Adsense Earnings Awesomeness

In 2008, Adsense was just what I stuck in free spaces in blogs. GOOG was nice enough to send over an automated email a long while ago saying “hey, optimize your Adsense the way we suggest.” If you haven’t done so, you’re probably missing out on huge earnings. I got tired of manually editing themes, and wrote up a plugin to add Adsense as recommended in the optimization guide and according to the heatmap, and you’re probably seeing the first pass at the fruits of my labor as we speak.

Adwords "remarketing" has to get smarter

I wonder if I’m the only one seeing that the “behavioral” aspect of Adsense might not be working out as well as everybody hoped/planned/etc. I understand why I’m seeing some of the ads I’m seeing, but I’m not liking it, and it worries me….

Sad SEO Google fail

B&N’s PubIt is pretty cool. Unfortunately, Google seems to think that PubIt has something to do with PubIc which results in really not useful SERPs for PubIt which I assume is causing B&N some consternation if they’re monitoring searches for their service. In the course of doing keyword research and branding your products and whatnot it’s becoming more and more essential to make sure Google’s not trying to be too clever for any given thing.

This isn’t the first time Google’s been too clever for its own good, and this time it’s not even doing a “do you mean” and just showing me results for “pubic publishing” instead of “pubit publishing.” You’d think they’d learn their lesson after the car theft fiasco about a year ago.
