“SEOs” are some of the most obnoxious beings online. Their response to anything search related, correct or incorrect, is “I knew that.” They argue passionately about topics they’re nearly completely ignorant of, dealing in hearsay and nonsense. It’s like psychics arguing over which type of Tarot card predicts the future more accurately. Worse, this particular online snake-oil is beginning to be accepted as legitimate, when all it takes is a tiny following of the money to figure out the source of this particular hucksterism. The touts tout backlinks because there is a backlink industry, not because they’re particularly effective in and of themselves. They tout “content” and “articles” because there is a content and article market.
But the most obvious – take a look at the top sites in Alexa. What percentage of their traffic is from search engines? How many backlinks are they buying? Are they buying penny-a-word “articles,” or offering something else?
